Objective: Students will create a unique, functional ceramic lantern using one of the techniques we have learned in Clay 1 and 2: slab construction, drape-mold, or a combination with coils. Students will cut a design out of the slab revealing negative space that will be lit by a candle.

Requirements:
Must be 6” tall
Organic or geometric design
Functional (must have a base)
Creative and unique
Good craftsmanship
Well planned negative space

To begin:
  1. Brainstorm a list of ideas/ inspiration while observing and discussing slides
  2. In your sketch book divide the paper into six sections. Draw six different thumb-nail sketches. Print out references for your design if needed
  3. Pick your favorite design and draw it three more times changing the color, form, or pattern, (etc).
  4. Final drawing to scale, in color, in your sketchbook. Please also include your plan for your building method
  5. CREATE!

Requirements:
Height: No shorter than 7" no taller than 8"
Creative: Original, imaginative ideas, interesting concepts, unafraid to take risks.

Textures: Multiple interesting surface textures (at least 2. smooth does not count.
Function: Plan ahead- how will it stand/sit/hang on a wall
Hollow: No area may be thicker than ½ inch

To Begin: three sketches due:
1. Start with several small sketches. Let your ideas build on one another.
2. Divide your paper into 6 sections:
  1. Close up of face
  2. Combine 2 animals
  3. Draw creature differently: sitting/standing
  4. Add 2 different textures
  5. Draw back view- 2 different versions (2 drawings)
3. Print out at least 2 references that you will use for your detailed drawing/ sculpture
4. Rough draft for final drawing


Final Drawing: Detailed drawing in color- back and front view- You must have at least one printed image you are using as a reference for your drawing. Your drawing will be on the table next to you every day as your reference. You must include TEXTURE in your drawing.
